In September 2022 the 25th Congress of the International Commission for Optics took place in Dresden. Not only beeing part of the local team, we were proud to have the opportunity to share a special session for students within this high-valuable scientific congress. Special thanks we want to share with the speakers for taking their time and presenting their inspiring student-optimized talks. We could really enjoy those amazing topics, had time for networking (especially during the dinner break) and took home new ideas.

Published on Leave a comment on Company visit in Berlin: HOLOEYE Photonics AG

In the end of June this year, we visited the company HOLOEYE in Berlin. A lot of our chapter members are using the Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs) from HOLOEYE in the labs for their experiments.

At HOLOEYE we had the unique opportunity to have a look at their labs for quality control and calibration measurements. Furthermore, we had some interesting discussions with the engineers from HOLOEYE about the SLM-technology. To make our daily life with SLMs easier they even developed a Display SDK, which we will for sure use in the future. We highly appreciate this visit and the insights we got into the work of HOLOEYE.

This may we learned some new skills in technical optics! Prof. Gross, worked a lot of years for the company Zeiss and afterwards teached at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena gave a weekend seminar in Dresden. We got impressive insights into modelling and simulation of different optics and optical systems. To do so we did spend a lot of hours in a seminar room of the computer science faculty, where Prof. Gross gave his lectures about topics such as optics design, aberrations and analysis of optical systems.

As a great start into the weekend we had the unique possibility to visit a local company for infrared senors and cameras in Dresden at Friday, 20th of May. The senior director Prof. Hofmann welcomed us and introduced us to his colleagues Dr. Hoffmann, Dr. Wassilew, Dr. Köhler and Dr. Tempelhahn.

During the visit we had 3 different tours including the sensor manufacturing, camera calibration and lens design department. Overall, this was a very interesting afternoon for all students and we were able to see behind the curtain in industry.

On 21th of March 2022 Prof. Aydogan Ozcan gave an online-lecture at the student chapter about "Diffractive Optical Networks & Computational Imaging Without a Computer".

The lecture gave us an insight into imaging with diffractive elements without using a computer, furthermore Prof. Ozcan also introduced other topics of his research group. Besides the TU Dresden Chapter also other interested students from optics joined.

At 19th of November the Student Chapter from TU Dresden invited the Chapter from University of Stuttgart (Germany), Stellenbosch University (Cape Town, South Africa) and University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) to a joint online workshop. There advisors and students from all chapters presented their current research topics and results. A lot of interesting questions and discussions came up after the talks.

We hope to continue organizing international workshops with other chapters. These events always offer new opportunities for joint projects or student exchange.

Our former and award-winning employee Dr. Katrin Philipp gives an interesting and mind-stimulating lecture. Among other things, she has also won the "Bertha Benz Award". Besides the awards she also was the first president of our student chapter.

On March 17th, the SPIE Dresden Student Chapter held a virtual photonic workshop with the Warsaw Student Chapter. There the presenters Grzegorz Gomolka and Karolina Gemza from Poland gave an insight to their current research topics of “Laser gas spectroscopy in hollow-core optical fibers” and “Simulations of chromatic dispersion for various types of microstructured optical fibers”. Our chapter members Jiawei Sun and Katharina Schmidt also added talks about their projects (optical tweezers and smart microscopy).

Furthermore there were fruitful discussions after the presentations about the topics and other activities of the chapters. This workshop is the start of a successful collaboration between our chapters and we are looking forward to more shared activities in the future.

Dr. Voisiat gave the Student Chapter Dresden an interesting lecture about the fast and accurate method of material surface pattering via laser interference. He is also wokring at TU Dresden at the Chair of Lage Area Laser Based Surface Structuring. In his talk Dr. Voisiat presented some impressive use cases for laser interference in surface functionalization.

In Nov. 2020, we organized our first online senimar due to the limitation of pandemic. Our alumni Dr. Robert Kuschmierz shared his research topic on Minimally invasive imaging by speckle based coding of 3D information. Since Robert works directly in the local area, afterwards we met for a barbecue at our university, following the hygiene regulations. Here we could conclude the day and discuss important aspects of Robert's lecture.
